Vaccinations, passport ... and working towards more funds

27/11/2014

I have just seen the long list of immunisations I need for the expedition. In addition to all the usual ones, I need Hepatitis A, Rabies (3 jabs), Hepatitis B (3 jabs), Typhoid, TB and Yellow Fever. I have also seen how much that lot is going to cost. OUCH!! Fortunately, my parents have kindly volunteered to pay that bit, so that is one less thing to fundraise for.

I have also realised that I need a new passport, as my current one expires in September. I have filled out the online application forms, and now need to get some photos done next time I am in town.

Today, I have been working on Christmas cards again… I think I am going to be doing a Goldcrest as one of my commissions. I have been doing some etching; today I got out my mother’s mini etching-press, and I got covered in ink. It was lots of fun, anyway.

Tack så mycket Farmor och Farfar

I have spent the weekend trying to design Christmas cards as I have two commissions to fulfil. These should provide a boost to my expedition fundraising. I haven’t really come up with any ideas I am pleased with yet, but I am thinking of a bird theme (like last year’s robin). I have done some art courses this Autumn with wildlife artists Cath Hodsman, Jackie Garner and Peter Partington, and hope to be able to incorporate some of their guidance into my work.

Today I visited the Kensmyth Alpaca Stud in South Cerney to receive a cheque for sponsorship of my expedition. I thoroughly enjoyed the visit, and loved meeting the Alpaca. They are beautiful little creatures. I was surprised at how small they are and hadn't expected them to be quite so endearing.

Thanks again to Kensmyth Alpaca Stud for sponsoring me.

Alpaca are domesticated and bred for their fibre. In Peru they live in herds in the Andes roughly between 3,500 - 5,000m above sea level.

Alpaca are the domesticated form of the wild vicuña and Llamas (considerably larger than Alpaca) are the domesticated form of the wild guanaco.

As the Peruvian proverb says: "Little by little one walks far".

This seems to apply to my fundraising - every venture I make to raise funds is a step closer to my destination. My latest project is a pile of Fair Trade scarves to sell on eBay.  They look fabulous: such wonderful colours. Here are just a few of them.

“Alpaca my bags” – I’m off to Peru: thanks to sponsorship from KENSMYTH ALPACA STUD

Alpaca are synonymous with Peru. Whilst I won’t see Alpaca in the Amazon jungle, I might see them on the way over the Andes to where the expedition will be based. However, I shouldn’t have to wait quite that long to catch a glimpse of an Alpaca because on Thursday I will visit the Kensmyth Alpaca Stud, who have generously offered to sponsor my venture to Manu. This puts me another step closer towards my goal.

Another car boot sale

16/11/2014

I have just returned from another car boot sale in Gloucester. Lots of people, but not many buying, and not many selling either. I was delighted, however, to raise nearly another £100 towards my cause.

Another busy couple of weeks

7/11/2014

I have recently registered “Angus Exploring” with “Easy Fundraising”, which means that we (or anyone else who wishes to help me) can do online shopping with big retailers (like Ocado, Waitrose, Tesco, Amazon, John Lewis, PC World), who will then donate a percentage to Angus Exploring, without costing us, or anyone else supporting me, any money. There is even the possibility of  using the search engine “easysearch” to generate further donations to Angus Exploring, again at no cost to the user.

In the past couple of weeks I have bought some clothing wholesale to help generate some funds on eBay. However, the reality of this has been a little disappointing, as I am finding I am having to compete with various retailers who are buying enormous job lots at a much lower unit price, and then selling the items individually on eBay at ridiculously low prices. However, now that I have gained my first star rating on eBay, and 15 positive comments, I have in the space of three days sold two shirts and two dresses, which has generated a small amount of funds. I am surprised, however, at how lucrative it seems to be selling my old toys, such as Playmobil, Micro Machines and educational toys. Besides the money, it is great to feel I am recycling rather than contributing to landfill.

In addition to the wholesale clothes, I have also bought a large batch of ties (140 of them) and various other items, which I am putting by to sell at the next car boot sale on 15th November. I expect that this will be my last car boot for this year, as it is getting a bit too cold to be hanging around outside all day.
